BESPOKE SAFETY NETTING & EDGE PROTECTION FOR HS2 BUILDING

The National College for High Speed Rail in Doncaster is a prestigious development with lots of interest from both local and national government bodies. The centre is one of two High Speed rail colleges created to train thousands of HS2 engineers. The college comprises of 7200m2 of teaching and workshop space.

With the original company who were supposed to be providing the safety netting withdrawing at the last minute, as the project was too complex, PMC Safety Netting were asked by the main contractor, Wilmott Dixon Construction, to come along to a meeting only five days before the safety net, edge protection and stair tower installation date!

Non of the other contractors had the specific safety netting expertise required to ensure that the safety netting and edge protection could be physically and safely installed.

Our first step was to bring together our team including the Temporary Works Designer, Contracts Team and Pre-Construction Director to assess the structural design drawings. This raised a number of challenges, but with our Temporary Works Designer working until the small hours, we were able to present our proposal the next day, including a full pack of safety information.

Our solutions included:

  • Bespoke Edge Protection system which was classed as category two temporary works design under EN 5975
  • Bespoke Class C Edge Protection which included a comfort rail that still complied within the Class C definitions within BS EN 13374

Both of these solutions required a second design check.

  • Temporary stair tower installation
  • Safety netting that accommodated the tricky ‘northern light’ structure which were all built requiring access from internal floors

Health & Safety

Throughout the project, there were a number of H&S challenges that required us to demonstrate our proactive approach to risk assessments; our high levels of operative training and be fully prepared for every eventuality. Their Health & Safety department commented that ‘I’ve never had anyone be as prepared as they are.’

Whilst carrying out the works, no accidents were sustained throughout the 1000 man hours expended.

A happy main contractor

“On a professional level I have always regarded PMC as the benchmark for both quality and bringing a pragmatic approach to delivering safety solutions. Mike Atkinson’s specialism in both safety netting and in particular BS EN 13374 for the edge protection gave us the confidence and support that was required before they even commenced on site.

PMC have understood our needs as a Principal Contractor and fully bought into what we are trying to achieve. They have been approachable and professional at all stages of the scheme.”
